Our IT people set up Sharestream with the idea of using it to post audio and video course reserves on Blackboard. Unfortunately even if you could find a way to prevent the streaming media from storing in a temporary cache and being downloaded to individual computers, we ultimately came to the conclusion that the Digital Millenium Act and anti-circumvention rulings prevented us from creating digital copies of our DVDs. I have no doubt in my mind that being able to digitize reserve DVDs and putting them up on Blackboard would increase the number of courses using media reserves dramatically and solve many problems created by requiring students to come into the Music & Media Center to watch reserve media. Media libraries for the time being at least seem to be stuck with the costs of getting added copies for DVDs that are frequently on course reserves. I’m only just beginning to explore purchasing streaming licenses from the many vendors that offer them. Best, -lisa H.
