Greetings Collective Wisdom.

First, apologies for a really big message.

This time it is not a query but an opportunity. For of those of you who plan to attend ALA in DC this summer, who are also looking for a media-tastic pre-conference but couldn't find one, I would like to invite you to consider tying a slice of the International Documentary Film Conference, hosted by the American Film Institute as part of the AFI-Discovery Channel Silver Docs Documentary Film Festival.

This event is occurring simultaneously with our ALA Conference, just outside of DC in Silver  Spring Maryland. Please take a look at the registration announcement following. The full all conference, all festival pass is $400.00. If you can (afford and) do the whole thing along with ALA, then congratulations! You are a supreme (and wealthy or well funded) media librarian.

But, if you think you could spare only one day (Friday June 25th) and could arrive by Thursday night, then please read the remainder of my message just after the announcement below. I just might have a media-tastic bargain surprise for you.

First, look at the picture, then read the message afterwards. Then see you again at the bottom of the page....

Carleton's back....

Okay, if you wish you could do it all, but can come in a day early for ALA, here it is. In honor of the ALA attendees who are part of the collective wisdom of VRT (all right, any librarian can actually do this) SilverDocs has arranged a sort of "SilverDocs Lite" pass for us. They are allowing any librarian to register for the Friday Educator's Pass for $135. Just about the cost of a top-of-the-line pre-conference. So read on.

While the pass is originally intended for local teachers, any ALA Librarian registering will get this:
Thursday night reception, Friday all day access to the International Documentary Film Conference (3 tracks of meetings, one specifically for educators) any industry (meaning social) events happening Friday - Saturday, and 10 film vouchers for the film festival itself Friday through Tuesday. There are films on the weekend starting as late as midnight and social venues thereafter. Friday's conference schedule is being realigned to have one panels on documentary film and education which I helping to plan. So my point about it sort of being a media librarian pre-conference is true.

NOTE: This variation of the Educator Pass has been created especially for the VRT members since SilverDocs coincides with our conference. If you can get in one day early, think $135 it is a bargain for all the documentary films, conference topics and social events. I offer my apologies to any official ALA program that may overlap, but any "SilverDocs Lite" attendee should be able to add this on without interfering with any ALA scheduled activity except for lack of sleep by the end of ALA.

One last NOTE:
You should register for the EDUCATOR PASS for access to Festival, Conference & Education workshop. For optimal use you should try to be here Thursday night or early Friday. ALSO to facilitate the "educator" part of the registration, use your institutional address if you register online or include your business card if you do it by mail.

But wait there's more:
if you have "spouse" or other with you, you can each register even if the other is not an "educator."

If anyone has any questions for me, feel free to email me off-list.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
