Dear Ms. Laurent,

Actually "Girls Apart" is part of California Newsreel's backlist; it was
removed from active circulation after the end of apartheid. We do
print-on-demand for these titles. We can sell you a VHS with permission
to make a DVD for $195. Or we could sell you a DVD for $195 plus lab
charges for the DVD burn. Like most of our older titles, it is not
available for digital streaming because the digital clearances for
underlying footage and songs have not been paid. The reason we charge
additionally for streaming licenses is precisely to pay the clearances
for our pre-2000 titles. Unfortunately, it will take years to work
through the backlog but if we don't films like "Ethnic Notions," "Blue
Eyed," "James Baldwin: the Price of the Ticket," etc will no longer be
available.

Hi all -

Our copy of "Girls Apart" is on VHS and badly deteriorated and I haven't
been
able to find a vendor who is currently selling it online. Any ideas?

http://www.africanmedia.msu.edu/php/showfilm.php?id=22654

There's distributor info on the page above, but AFSC just has lending
copies
and I can't track down anything through Bowdoin.

Thanks in advance!

Kathleen,

If all you need is a VHS (since it looks like DVD is not available),
just borrow a decent copy from another library and make a VHS
replacement copy. Fully legal under 108 and could circulate just like
your badly deteriorating copy. http://librarycopyright.net/108spinner/

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
