I have used the DVD tattle-tape for years and never had any real problems. I
have never known one to get caught up in a player or a laptop.

We've had problems at the last library I worked in. Not only did they get
caught in computers but also in some DVD players, particularly the older ones.
While not the perfect solution my preference is to tattle tape the outside
spine of the case underneath the jacket. This helps to a degree with
intentional theft since if the item is going to be resold they get a higher
price for the case, insert, and jacket than they would for just the disc. More
importantly, it helps with unintentional theft as in those instances when a
distracted patron is in a hurry and slips the DVD case and all into their bag
without even thinking.

They must be applied with care. We've had a few problems, but not enough to
warrant dropping their use.

We've had a couple of instances where labeled DVDs (we apply a ring label to
DVDs) have gotten stuck in Mac computers that have slots (not trays) for discs,
both laptop and desktop.

In a word-yes.

Balance can be thrown off, and sometimes the increased thickness causes them to
"stick" while spinning.

Has anyone heard of tattle-tape making DVDs unreadable by laptops?

Thanks,
Jacqueline

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
