Was there any warning/information when you ordered it? Where you asked to agree to any conditions before the sale? If you bought this from a legimate place and there was nothing regarding this before it arrived, it should not be a problem. US law simply requires that it be a legal copy, beyond that it becomes a contract issue between you and the seller. I would look back at the website or wherever you got it from. Keep in mind that Canada does not have any classroom exemption so that warning might have been meant for Canadian institutions.
Bottom line is that sellers can restrict how their films are used, but only by contract. VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
