Hello again. I am a member of the University of Michigan School of
Information group, doing a semester-long study of U-M's Askwith's
Media Library and video collection development in general.
Thanks to lots of help from Gary Handman, we are coming down the
stretch in good shape. Our final separate assignment deals with Policy
Guidelines. If your institution has guidelines specifically pertaining
to video and other multimedia material, could you either post the link
or send us a copy of them to us at [email protected]. We'd
also like to hear about what informal guidelines you follow, how you
decide, etc.
At the very least (and we're not really asking this from you) we need
to put together guidelines that identify (1) who is responsible for
selecting materials, (2) criteria for selection, (3) gift policies,
(4) intellectual freedom policies and procedures, (5) provision for
review and amendment of the guidelines, and (6) approval by the
agency’s governing body. So if you have any thoughts on these matters,
we'd love to hear them.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
