Yikes! This is definitely an area where folks should show support in whatever ways possible.
Another issue, slightly off topic is one that I see bearing it's complicated face in the near future: Nexus. Nexus means connection. It means that organizations may be liable sales/use taxes when selling videos or even digital downloads. State tax laws vary from state state. And, since the Supreme Court has refused to hear any cases on this so far, it's becoming a feeding frenzy for states assessing taxes willy nilly. As the economy continues to dive, and states scramble, they tend to lean on creative, even legally questionable, taxes to fill their coffers. California, from what I can see, doesn't assess tax on video productions. Texas taxes digital downloads, Arizona doesn't. How these apply to educational institutions ... that also seems to vary. Any experts out there? Should I close this Pandoras box here? VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
