Sorta depends on the printed material, Dennis. I think program notes for
feature films can be useful (and have actually been used on occasion
here)--providing they're authoritative and add something to the
literature.

(The same, I might say, goes for supplementary materials on DVDs)

On the other hand, program notes for educational and documentary titles
(printed or online) are almost totally ignored. Faculty are a skittish
and insecure lot...they use what they want to use, and they certainly
don't want to use anyone else's take on the film or video they're showing
in class. For all the work PBS has put into developing ancillary web
sites, I've never known a faculty person at UCB to use them in connection
with a doc screening.

"I have always preferred the reflection of life to life itself."
--Francois Truffaut

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
