Hi all

I periodically get queries from faculty and others re
requirements/legalities/fair use allowances when using still shots from
movies in journal and book publication. I'm always at a bit of a loss.
Kristin Thompson has authored a very thoughtful opinion piece and report
on behalf of the Society for Media Studies

which tends to come down on the side of fair use for a great deal of this
practice.

I usually tell the potential user that publishers deal with this issue in
different ways (from the strict requirement to secure permissions, to
broad fair use allowances). The publisher is often the court of last
appeal in such cases (what the publisher demands, the publisher gets)

Wonder how you handle this stuff in your organization.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
