Hello Eileen,
Yes, I've noticed this with several DVDs of upcoming or recent feature
films -- mostly art-house type movies. Fortunately, they all appear to
be packaged with a standard disc, so that patrons who do not have a
BluRay player will still be able to view the film. My guess is that it
is becoming more cost-effective for the distributors to include both
kinds of discs in one package rather than release two separate packages
for both SD and Bluray. They're also no doubt hoping that most users
will be transitioning to Bluray, which I'm not entirely convinced will
happen -- and certainly isn't happening in the campus environment.
(Very few classrooms here are outfitted with Bluray players or
projection capabilities.) Two that come to mind for which I've noticed
this are The Illusionist (recent animated film) and Another Year. Also,
for one PBS documentary (Salt). I've emphasized to our staff and
student attendants that we will need to look more closely at our Bluray
records to determine which are packaged with SD discs and which are
not. It's a pain, but I'm afraid it's the only option at this point if
we want these titles in the collection (and we do). Separating the
discs would be problematic for cataloging and we would also lose the
cover art.
Best,

Dear CW,
Is it becoming a trend now to only release films in Blu-Ray? I had my third
request for a film, this time Certified Copy, which I have found only in
Blu-Ray. Does anybody know if this film will be released as a standard DVD?
Thank you for your help in this matte.
