Ha ha, in case anyone's wondering, I though Erika had sent this message
directly to me rather than to videolib. That's why it's a bit more casual and
conversational. BTW, Erin Mayhood is our Director for User Experience and was
instrumental in helping us switch over to a new user interface that
incorporates facets, etc. I worked with her and some of our developers to come
up with a "video portal" that would help patrons search just for videos using
facets that are specific to this area, more or less. It's still a work in
progress, but at least now our patrons can search for videos by language.

Sure, I don't mind. It's your former collection anyway. :)

You can actually learn a lot about our collection from the Video View page in
Virgo:
http://search.lib.virginia.edu/catalog?portal=video

According to the facets on the left, under "Format" you can see that we have
16,539 DVDs and 15,548 VHS tapes. By clicking "See More" you can see all of
the other formats too (2,738 LDs, etc.). Erin Mayhood says these numbers are
slightly incorrect since, I think, they basically represent search hits for
titles, rather than copies. I think. So if we have 10 copies of Citizen Kane
all on one record then that would show up as 1 in the Format facet. So we have
16,539 titles and, say 17,000 copies?

As for reserves, I do have some data for spring 2010. It looks like we had
1,253 DVD *copies* on reserve (so sometimes multiple copies of the same title),
341 VHS, and 31 laserdiscs.

Just out of curiosity. Would you mind sharing how many VHS titles and how many
DVD titles you have in your collections. Also I'd be interested in how many
titles you put on reserve per semester. Just ball park numbers. I'm not doing
anything with these figures other than pondering them.

As for us:
We have in the neighborhood of 9300 VHS titles, 7000 DVD titles and put about
100 items on reserve per semester.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
