I thought echinesemovie looked kind of fishy when I glanced at the site yesterday before posting, and I think Jessica has a point. However, the actual dvd we bought from them (a few years ago) has a classy elaborately printed holder with a booklet and the disc itself is well-printed with "exclusive distributors Hong Kong and Macau" on it. It is no-region and has a choice of subtitles, including English. The site was a last recourse for finding the title. So my gut says this was not pirated or bootleg, but a legitimate copy, though importing it may be legally questionable.
I would agree that if a title is available elsewhere that would be preferable. A lot of their titles do look mighty iffy. But it might, as in the case of the film we bought, be a source for a legally made title that has not been released in the US. Ignoring for a moment that the site freely offers titles that have many films that have legal US rights holders including Kino, Sony, Miramax etc., companies that offer a variety of standard feature films which they theoretically are retailing (as in not the owner) in multiple formats especially region free are not selling legal copies authorized by rights holders. However many of these titles do not have a legit US distributor and the import market is so convoluted that in most cases they are from bootleggers and pirates. I would make sure not to buy any title from this site that has or had US rights holders and a few clicks of the mouse can usually confirm that, beyond that you just have to go with your gut but just understand nothing they sell would be considered a legal copy.
