Hello VideoLib Folks,
A question for those of you who are using WorldCat Local... I often run
into problems with different 'versions' (adaptations, differing formats)
of a title being hidden under the obscure little 'Editions and formats'
link that appears beneath each record. I've been told that this has
something to do with OCLC's interpretation of FRBR. I have really
limited understanding of FRBR, but this latest wrench really has me
scratching my head.
If I search for the television series "How I Met Your Mother", of which
we own several seasons, Season Three can only be found in the results by
clicking the dreaded 'Editions and formats' link under Season One.
Seasons Two, Four, etc. all have their own records. So of course,
clicking around at sublinks for each season isn't exactly the most
obvious way to find it. Again, I've been told it's a FRBR issue. I
don't see how separate seasons of a television show can be considered
the same work, but then again, I am by no means an expert. Anyone with
a better grasp of these issues than me have any thoughts? Is there some
place to send records for some kind of 'appeal'?
At this rate, we're going to have puzzled patrons and requests that we
purchase something we already have.
Thanks,

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
