*"A subtle, strange and haunting work of art…a masterpiece in a form that does not yet exist"*
A.O.Scott, New York Times I have always tried to be honest in my views on films I have worked on over the years and I have worked on a number of great and important films, but none as extraordinary as THIS IS NOT A FILM <http://thisisnotafilm.net>, which is the top documentary and one the top films among critics in 2012. It is nearly impossible to describe because nothing I or anyone else could write could honestly convey its power and brilliance and this is not hyperbole. Please do not take my word for it just click on the links below or google it yourself. A deceptively simple “film” about a day in the life of famed Iranian director Jafar Panahi ( OFFSIDE, THE WHITE BALLOON) who is facing a six year jail sentence and 20 year ban from making films for "assembly and colluding with the intention to commit crimes against the country’s national security and propaganda against the Islamic Republic." As he awaits word of his appeal, he invites his colleague Mojitaba Mirtahmasb (who was arrested a year ago attempting l and charged with spying for the BBC) to come over. Using a digital camera and an iPhone, they create a extraordinary piece of cinema starring a pet iguana, a barking dog, clips of earlier Panahi films, street fireworks and a young man who comes to take out the garbage. THIS IS NOT A FILM was smuggled of Iran in flash drive hidden in a birthday cake and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival The highest rated (8.9 out of 10) film of 2012 by Rotten Tomatoes<http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/this_is_not_a_film_2011/>( which lists and ranks all reviews from major publications) Again I realize this sounds like hyperbole ,but if I had to pick only one film I have worked on in 25 years that should be in the collections of libraries and used in classes it would THIS IS NOT A FILM. Just pass this on to your faculty especially those in film studies, Middle eMst studies, law, human rights and others fields. Copies with PPR are $295 and this film should be SHOWN and is in fact being booked for shows at colleges all across the country. There are no restrictions other than the showing be non admission. We can sell streaming rights for up to 14 years ( yes I still believe that one can only sell streaming for as long as one has a contract) 5 of streaming with PPR is $495 and 14 years is $695. Ask if you want some other period. VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
