When we repackage DVDs into locking case, we move the paper insert (or use color copier to re-create the DVD art & info.) For foreign films, we add label so that title can be read in English and original language. Ex: Como agua para chocolate / Like water for chocolate. We have a few DVDs that aren't Region-1encoded, so those get sticker warning that they won't work on US DVD player. Our handful of BluRay discs get put in the smaller blue cases that identify them as BluRay.
Since all films can be used for face-to-face teaching, I'm curious why you add label stating that. We add note to bib record if DVD purchase included public performance rights. The default billing for overdue videos is set at $200 (it's remarkably effective in getting cheap titles returned). This is automatically sent via email. If patron lets us know that item is truly lost, we negotiate actual replacement cost. Student workers are trained to include "to avoid late fees..." when they tell patron due date. We've recently merged with the main library and I have some concerns about what is being left off. However, I'm hoping maybe I'm just over reacting. Ours may have been a little overkill as we included, inside the case "For face-to-face teaching/ No public performance license" and "Duplication of copyrighted material is prohibited..." on narrow bright orange labels. Ours is in a closed stack so there are no security strips needed. When applicable, a label stating the item cost over $100 was also affixed. Also, do you keep the dvd cover on the case? Your thoughts and opinions will be greatly appreciated ! You may email me separately if you prefer. Thanks. VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
