The Special Collections and University Archives at the University of Iowa are all over gifs in all the best ways. Here they reanimate an 1897 flipbook of a boxing match between James J. Corbett and Bob Fitzsimmons that same year. The fight was also the subject of a contemporary documentary, The Corbett-Fitzsimmons Fight, which at about 100 minutes was the longest film that had then ever been released, as well as the first feature film. That film came alive with this low-tech flipbook, and now, over a century later, it comes alive again with a Tumblr friendly gif.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
