We opened our DVD collection in 2005 when we only had a few hundred films. Our
collection has grown to a little more than 4,000. We keep them in a space with
our popular collection.
We label all of our DVDs with an LC call number. The call number is placed on
a DVD case for browsing and a paper disc sleeve for storing in a cd cabinet.
We keep the discs in the cabinet behind the service desk and the DVD cases get
shelved in open browsing cabinets. The discs in the cabinet behind the desk
are filed by call number. The browsing cases are shelved by the first letter
of the film title. So anything with a title that starts with "B" will be in
the "B" section, not in alphabetical order. So, they pick a case, bring it to
the desk, we use the call number on the case to locate the disc and put it in
the case for checkout. We don't worry about security since the discs are
stored behind the desk.
I will warn that is is a very labor intensive/time consuming way of doing
things. I think we spend more time shelving/pulling DVDs than anything else at
the desk. We had space and financial issues that prompted the move in this
direction. I looked at the Browser Pak product and determined it would be too
costly for us. We already had the cd cabinet so we were just re-purposing an
empty cabinet. We did move to an extra slim DVD case for browsing purposes to
save space. I have been very happy with the paper sleeves that we use. They
are practically indestructible.
Overall, it seems to work but could be better. I just haven't figured out a
better way yet.

Subject: [Videolib] moving to open stacks
Hi videlib
The Tisch library is in the early planning stages of moving the library DVD
collection from a closed to open stacks. We want to keep the collection
together in one place. The current filing system is by call number dv1 is the
first film in the collection dv13912 is the last film in the collection. I was
wondering how other libraries arranged the films in open stacks. Also do you
use any security system with the open stacks?
