Hello,

A patron just asked a very interesting question: is it piracy or a copyright
issue if he watches free movies on a website that aggregates the movies from
other sources. The following is from the site he's been using to watch movies,
Megavideo.

"

The content is hosted on other sites such as Veoh.com, putlocker.com,
Youtube.com and other popular video hosts. This website links to these websites
either directly or by an embed code. This site doesn't host any content on it
own server and just linking to content that was uploaded to popular Online
Video hosting sites like dailymotion.com, sockshare.com, ZShare.net,
nowvideo.eu, vureel.com, imdb.com and such sites. megavidmovie.com is not
responsible for what other people upload to 3rd party sites. We urge all
copyright owners, to recognize that the links contained within this site are
located somewhere else on the web."

I honestly don't know what to tell him. I'm not sure who could give him a
correct, legal answer, but I thought I'd try asking this group.

Thanks!

Patricia

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
