Hi Kimberley, I presented a full-day workshop at the Museum Computer Network Conference in Las Vegas in 2003 on analog and digital video in cultural institutions. http://www.michaelborthwick.com.au/workshops.htm This included a discussion of differences between various analogue and digital tape formats ie (DVCAM and Umatic respectively), the theory of digitisation, system and file storage requirements and some case studies showing workflows from various digitisation projects large and small. The 'Audiovisual Reformatting and Encoding Project' undertaken at the University Library System of the University of Pittsburgh would be particularly relevant for you. Not much has changed in the ensuing decade although the digitisation hardware that you will need to get the analogue Umatic tapes into digital form is of course much cheaper and of higher quality today. If I package that slide deck up as a PDF and email it to you I think it will help orient you in this area and we can chat via phone or email for further context. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
