Hello Videolib and Videonews (apologies for the duplication), Several subscribers were automatically unsubscribed early this morning because of a "bounce error" issue that we believe was caused by network issues on the UC Berkeley campus. I imagine several hundred more of you received bizarre bounce warning emails without being unsubscribed-- I am sorry for that. I've made some modifications to the listserv settings to hopefully resolve the issue, but please feel free to contact me directly if you have questions or concerns.
With all these bounce warnings going out, I've had a couple of Dorothy-like "Who are you?!" questions directed to the woman behind the listserv curtain. Hi, I'm Gisele. Some people call me "The New Gary [Handman]," or "The Keeper of Gary's Chutney Recipe" which are both improvements over my old moniker, "Gary's Sidekick"... Actually, a security guard once started telling people I was Gary's daughter because he overheard Gary calling me Kiddo, which is particularly funny because we very much have a Laurel and Hardy look about us when walking together. I worked as Gary's Operations Supervisor for 6 years before he retired, and was the last woman standing from our former 3 FTE power-house at Berkeley's Media Center. If I have neglected to post to the listserv (and I have), it's because I am usually trying to find someone to clean up the contraband coffee an undergrad spilled in our viewing room while overriding a fine on the circ desk and marking up my Video Librarian, approving invoices and performing original cataloging of someone's home video of a reunion of HUAC protesters, while doing a victory dance for having tracked down the producers of a documentary on California Prisons, while gently explaining to a grad student why they can't find a whole buncha TV ads for birth control pills from the 60's, while totally forgetting I'm supposed to be in a meeting across campus. After several bad budget years, we are finally getting a new influx of permanent staff to oversee both operations and cataloging/tech services functions here. So I'll get to share some of the fun with others and will finally have some sense of a return to normalcy-- and we will hopefully be seeing more of each other on the listserv. I don't mean to say that I'm not watching and reading closely-- I very much am (and some of you hear from me quite frequently!)... I would like to thank you all for keeping up the vibrant and informative discussions. Gary asks about the haps on both lists frequently-- and you all continue to make him very proud! Please, never hesitate to contact me directly with any questions or concerns about either Videonews/Videolib or video in general or just to say "Hello there!" VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
