Thanks Meghan, this is useful. From limited feedback, it appears the common thread is diminished use of international VHS library based collections, but perhaps still a valid enough programmatic rationale to try and maintain access to a world VCR given 1) that our collections still have some international formats 2) individuals (e.g., grad students/instructors) have their own international VHS materials 3) there are few, if any, viable alternatives available elsewhere on most campuses and 4) occasionally, some individuals may want to transcode a clip from an international VHS tape (provided your media center offers that capacity). In sum, it appears this is a minimal (but important) library based collections access issue and more of a programmatic campus service gap decision. To that end, I will advocate that we at least try to get the international VCR repaired if we can, as they are virtually impossible to find brand new. I'm trying to hold out for at least a couple of more years, but I understand if market forces stand in the way (teaser: I suspect this theme will emerge again soon in relation to future general VHS support in campus classrooms ;-)).
As a result, I suspect some may be transcoding international materials to other formats a la Video At Risk. We do not currently offer this service for a number of reasons, and I appreciate your preference to disclose this practice here or offline if you do. VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
