New foreign films are especially tricky. Most do not get US distribution and those that do take time. I think Mia Madre is in the news because it was to be distributed by Alchemy but they are broke and its fate is not clear. It is possible one or more of the others has a US distributor. You can usually find this by seeing if they have been in a US festival and who is listed as the source.
For ones ( probably most) that do not have US distributors you would have to track down the rights holder/sales agent and while anything can happen they are not too likely to work with a college film rental. They are not being nasty ( well sometimes they are) but they are focused on getting a US distribution deal and are not likely to get involved in anything else. VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
