Oh and the German company you saw was probably Murnau Stiftung which is who Kino has the deal with. Films made before 1923 are in the Public Domain BUT as is often the case the best "versions" have what is known as "special contents" copyright and are in my view well worth paying the company that invested in the better copy for the rights to it.
