Sujet: [debian-knoppix] Using Knoppix for rescue disk. ExpÃditeur: John Culleton <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Fri, 4 Feb 2005 19:31:26 -0500 Destinataire: Debian - Knoppix <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I know of at least one MSWindows user who keeps a Knoppix disk around to rescue his system in case of a catastrophic event, such as a virus. He uses Knoppix to access his intact files.
I am trying to figure out how this works. During a Knoppix session can one dismount the CDR and then write to a blank cdr or cdrw? If so, is there a way to stream the data so that one wouldn't need 700 MB somewhere to store an iso image? Perhaps one can write a track at a time? I am assuming an NTFS file system on the hard drive.
Suggestions welcomed.
Hello there,
When you boot with a livecd Knoppix, you can not have access to the CDRom drive you used with the Knoppix CD. It is locked and not accessible.
You can mount and read NTFS partitions and if you need to, you may then save (copy) the files to a removable device like an USB drive. If you have a second CDRom drive (e.g. an IDE CD-RW drive or an USB one) you may also burn your data on CDs. If you have an USB CD-RW drive it might be better to plug it in before booting Knoppix as then it might be automatically recognized by Knoppix.
