Do you know anyone in Saigon that > has the LiveCDs for the AMD64? Be careful here. I mean when chosing hardware. Must be because I got a piece of crap (it's an MSI board with an onbard PCI Express ATI video card, amd64 3200+) or Linux still kinda flaky on amd64. Below is my experience so far Gentoo installed and ran fine until I compile lotsa programs. I think it was gtk. The box freezes. Ubuntu installed fine but was very slow. I type at console and the letter appears one by one. Some readers on osnews reported freezing symptom as well. Fedora Core 4 Test installed fine. I brieftly use it but couldn't get vmware to work, plus they use gcc4 so I gave up. CentOS 4.0 installed and run fine but i can't set DMA for the hard drive which slow down a lot. Perhaps the chipset for the IDE controller was not compiled in the kernel. I have yet time to check to see which chipset that is. > > Tracy and I had the first Saigon Linux User Group meeting last > Saturday. We had some activities awhile back (Linux classes for students, new users). I also have heard the class will start again this month. I hope to have Gentoo 2005.0 Universal CD in Saigon in a few days. > If anyone is interested in Gentoo here, I would like to meet up with > them. > Kevin > I cc'ed our mailing list.
