Your best/easiest way to run with Windows environment is to use openSUSE for back-end server because it provides features, such as, PDC using Samba+LDAP but you dont' have to pull your hair out to configure it. For internal email, set up a private dns. Create a domain, users, set up postfix and dovecot then you could send/receive emails internally. Again, YaST (openSUSE) will let you do these steps in a few clicks.
