It may not be a "solved problem", but most of us use the standard Emacs features such as buf-menu, to look at the loaded folders, or dired, to look at the folders in a directory. There is a "folders summary" feature in VM, but it is tied to something called "berkeley db". Arik is working on disentangling it from berkeley db. I have no idea when that might become available.
