Is this 'vm-arrived-messages-hook' set in your .vm or .emacs files
anywhere?  Mine is set to 'nil' which looks to be the default.  

It would be nice if there was a way to test VM changes with the
absolute minimal needed config to get/send emails from your personal
accounts, but all the other customizations are set to defaults.

Can you try setting up a minimal .vm and start emacs with 'emacs -q'
and then slowly add back in the stuff needed to get VM loaded and
running?  Does the problem still happen?
