Hi, Stuart,
that's the city where I was born and where I stayed 'till I was 20, and
I know it very well!
Don't miss the Prado, of course. If I had time for only one place, that
would be my choice. I would go straight to the flemish painters in the
basement (there is a Descending of the Cross by van der Weyden with the
most beautiful blue you will see in your life), to Velazquez (Las
Meninas), and to Goya (the Dog Buried in the Sand).
With more time I would travel to Toledo. You can manage a visit of the
city, including the two-way travel, in one day.
And regarding early music and the lute, find 1 hour for visiting
Ars-Antiqva (spelled with 'v'. www.ars-antiqva.com). It's in the center,
and you will be delighted with what they have! But they are closed from
27th aug till the 6th. sept.
Enjoy!
