I started musical life on a ukelele. Our music school had a scheme in which after a first year of general music tuition (singing songs, banging on a xylophone and learning to read musical notation) the second year was divided in one 'theory' lesson and one 'music' lesson every week. The latter was on your instrument of choice: recorder or ukelele. That was an easy choice, even without the association of an electrical guitar. My ukelele is now tuned as a renaissance guitar and I love to play the two De Rippe fantasias on it.
