Nicely played, Stuart. Sounds familiar, but can't place it. It's going
to bug me all day now!

Stuart and Rob,
I thought Rocky did a nice job, too. What do you make of the "Wusch
Englisch" or "Vush English"
tune? Do you recognized the tune? = "wash" or in dialect "wish"
(Wunsch).
Here's a simple rendition of the tune (I'm an amateur). It's played
on a very humble, factory-made seven-string Russian guitar but tuned
in the correct way. There's a strum on the open strings at the start
to show the tuning - very soupy! I put a capo on (somewhat
arbitrarily) to raise the pitch a bit, on the supposition that the
intended instrument would have been smaller than a Russian guitar.
Hope it gives some indication of the piece:

Doesn't sound familiar at all. Doesn't sound particularly English.
Almost Balcarres?

The PDF file contains edited tab with a transcription, plus 2
transpositions for guitar. Some of the pieces would work for
baroque guitar (with a low fifth) if the low notes are played an
octave higher.
Some of the titles are not clear to me, so I would be happy to hear
if anyone has suggestions as to the spellings. I have included on
page in the PDF with text examples and the problematic titles.
Takk til Frank!

Very interesting and thanks for all this. Nice design on the cover
too.
I wonder what sort of cittern the music was intended for? It's the
same tuning intervals as a cithrinchen (but with two? extra basses)
But we're in the 18th century now so...not a small bell cittern?
(Maybe a bigger instrument like Bellman's Swedish instrument?)
You've transcribed it with a top course tuned to d. Is there an
indication in the MS about this?
Anyway, I've tuned up a guitar to this tuning, (possibly an octave
too low) and I've been playing through it. It's simple fare - but
precious, of course. Some of the pieces sound sort of familiar but
nothing more than that for me. I can't see any connection with
English 'guittar' music or tuning.
The main thing I've noticed from a quick read-through, is the
lowest note, the seventh course. It almost always sounds odd. In a
couple of places you have actually 'corrected' the tablature and
used the open sixth course. And in almost every other place where
the seventh course is, the sixth course - to me - sounds more
probable. Does the tablature unambiguously show seven courses?
Anyway, great work. Much appreciated.
Stuart
