That is all absolutely fascinating!
The question that remains is what is the earliest version.
The Sychra version comes from a vaudeville COSSACK-THE-POET staged in 1812,
the composer of which was Catterino Davos, a Venetian. However there are two
instances of the tune that predate the vaudeville by some 20 years, so we
may safely assume it is not by Davos.
And believe it or not- I did work on All My Children crew for some 6 months
back in 1992 (but I've never seen a single episode).

Funny, I remember this piece as a pop song ("schlager") years ago, sung
in Finnish. I cannot remember the lyrics. Perhaps Timo P, another Finn
here, has better memory?
