I was looking at bug reports on source forge.
It looks like "SRTM Server changed - FIX included - ID: 2812856" may have taken
care of "Can't add or use DEM Layer - ID: 2717671".

I am running Mint8 which is based on Ubuntu and had the same problem. However,
my problem was because of file permissions. I copied .viking-maps from another
hard drive from a different linux install. Once I changed the permissions it
started working properly.
