I use viking at work, behind a corporate proxy. It works just fine with http_proxy environment variable. Syntax is http_proxy=http://login:passw...@proxy.adress:proxy_port/
As I use Gnome, this variable is automatically set in gnome-terminal. Perhaps do you set an other configuration used by libcurl breaking your proxy conf. (I know libcurl read $HOME/.netrc).
