Yes, I essentially agree - it is confusing to have two extremely similar buttons which do extremely similar things. Have I previously investigated this a bit since I don't think it's very obvious; and now done some more, here's my thoughts. The current situation is: 'Create Track' -> enables one to start *and continue[1]* creating a track. 'Begin Track' -> always starts a new track. (but then switches into create track mode upon first mouse click!) [1]So if you start creating a track (by either way add some points but then decide to use some other tool, eg 'create waypoint' - create some waypoints, now if you select 'create track' again, new trackpoints are added onto the track. If one presses 'Esc' in either mode then the current track is 'completed' and no longer drawn in the red dashed line. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now I believe the way 'Begin Track' works is better because the functionality doesn't change. [And if one wants to continue a track the best way is via the layers menu with the 'Extend Track End' option.] Whereas 'Create Track' breaks HCI guidelines that functionality is not state dependent. 'Create Track' works better fine if one calls it / thinks of it as 'Continue Track'. So the current functionality is OK, but better GUI if renamed & reordered, something like: . Rename 'Begin Track' -> to 'Create Track' . Rename 'Create Track' -> to 'Continue Track' . Make 'continue track' only available when then is a current track.* or Make it do nothing / throw message when there is no current track +understand how the cursor pointer is changed and prevent that when 'continue track' not available. . Keep whatever is the 'Create Track' button furthest left / tools menu entry highest . Improve the 'continue track' icon somehow --> Maybe just move the '+' part onto the right hand end trackpoint (maybe remove one trackpoint so the plus is clearer when in the track) *is hard/much more work since this button/menu update control doesn't seem fit in with the current tool control method Be Seeing You - Rob. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving isn't for you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This SF.net email is sponsored by Make an app they can't live without Enter the BlackBerry Developer Challenge http://p.sf.net/sfu/RIM-dev2dev _______________________________________________ Viking-devel mailing list Viking-devel@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/viking-devel Viking home page: http://viking.sf.net/
