I have a gpx.viking file so I can do

  viking gpx.viking foo.gpx

and get the map layers I want without having to configure them. This
generally works well. I put /home/gdt/VIKING as the map cache
directory, and this works fine on the BSD system is was written on. But
on my mac, it fails because /home is some automount cruft and /home/gdt
inexplicably fails to map to /Volumes/gdt.
So, I'd like to put

  ~gdt/VIKING

or

  $HOME/VIKING

or something like that in the file, so it will work on multiple places,
or some other syntax. Is there a way to do this already, and if not,
thoughts on how it should be?
