I tried a git fetch just now and it works. Personnally, I use git+ssh,
not the raw git protocol. So, I'm not able to conclude for your own
case.

Reading the Sourceforge page, I fear the URL you use is incorrect. Try:
git clone git://viking.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/viking/viking

(please, note the repetition of "viking")
