E.g. I am on a bike tour, usually about 4 hours
I also get around 14400 track points.

The track that provoked my complaint was similar. Except I was visiting
town boundary markers as an official government function :-)

In my Pentium 1.86GHz 2GB RAM this track is unusable in viking.
I can't zoom or drag around because viking is busy all the time.

0) What OS/release/etc? My system is NetBSD/i386 5.1, Xorg Server 1.6.3
Release Date: 2009-7-7. 3.4 GHz single cpu (HTT), 2 G ram.

1) Can you do this again with 'top' or some such running, and figure out
if it's viking or Xorg using the cpu? In my case it definitely seems to
be more of an Xorg problem.

thanks for the merge/simplify trick.

It would be cool if viking could have an option to do that for display
only somehow, restoring to full track when zoomed in.
But that sounds hard and my approach, once it works, is to skip
subsequent points with the same screen coordinates.

Perhaps an elapsed time monitoring infrastructure to record redraw times
would help.
