First of all, you have to add a "Map" layer and select a map's source.
Following your needs, select an auto-download. When you validate this
layer, map will be downloaded (or you will need to right click the
layer and request a map refresh).

For more support, feel free to use the mailing-list, many users will
help you to begin with viking.
