Having looked into this a bit more thoroughly I can't see any thing wrong with the Viking code, the file name is given back from the Gtk Code. Thus it's either a fault in Vikings usage of Gtk Recent Files, or a problem in gtk. The working Debian version is linked against 'libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.2400.8' which is presumably Gtk 2.24.8 Not working Ubuntu version is linked against 'libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.2400.6' which is presumably Gtk 2.24.6 Looking at http://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/log/?h=gtk-2-24, I don't see anything obvious but there has been 'Recent File' changes (more for the Open Dialog) rather than the file list per application.
