This also turned out not to be a major difficulty, after reading the 
Viking manual. I had tried "reload all onscreen maps" but without any 
obvious benefit. The solution was to switch from the default "viking 
zoom level" to the zoom levels that I wanted to use before reloading the 
maps. Once this somewhat fiddly task was completed I returned to the 
"viking zoom level" The manual mentioned a script that automates this 
task. A brief Google search didn't turn up anything.

Now that I've mentioned the Viking manual I have another question that 
I'll post a little later.
