I haven't read the code, but:

If one has a track with a bunch of points, taken either say at 5s
interval or some form of automatic, then if one says "where was the GPSr
at time t" it will typically be between recorded points, and it
definitely makes sense to return the interpolated location between the
points rather than picking one of them.

But I don't understand if that is the same thing to "first and last
trackpoint", as I would expect all trackpoints to have times.
