It doesn't happen for me, thus something in your setup must somehow
change it.  I see the "readonly" in the right place, both for Vim 6 and
Vim 7.


I don't have Vim 6 anymore, but as I said, I see the error in console Vim (in konsole) but not in gvim (the executable is the same, see ":version" listing below). The example given includes a custom vimrc (bypassing the ~/.vimrc). I have no ~/.gvimrc. --noplugin or -N make no difference. With --noplugin, :scriptnames shows that no scripts at all (other than "1", the example script) have been sourced.
