As I recently (today) saw a few postings with vim8 suggestions, I would like to propose emacs like overlays
I've already requested this and it's the only thing I'd require from Vim8. With overlays one wouldn't need the "hackish" :match command and one could do funky stuff like forms and advanced abbreviations, a la Textmate and Visual Studio. It could be implemented using marks that also keep track of the column in the line they adhere to, but something lower-level would probably be way-more beneficial. It does, however, require a lot of restructuring of the internal buffer-handling, so I'm not hoping for much. nikolai
