I've already requested this and it's the only thing I'd require from
Vim8.  With overlays one wouldn't need the "hackish" :match command
and one could do funky stuff like forms and advanced abbreviations, a
la Textmate and Visual Studio.  It could be implemented using marks
that also keep track of the column in the line they adhere to, but
something lower-level would probably be way-more beneficial.

It does, however, require a lot of restructuring of the internal
buffer-handling, so I'm not hoping for much.
