Seb mentioned performance problems loading the main page a while ago. It
seemed to get better, but lately it's been pretty bad again.

I booted my computer, and went to the main page. Waiting, waiting... Opened
new browser instance and went to recent changes page - opened quickly. The
main page was still showing blank, and appeared maybe 30 seconds later
(around 2 minutes total).

I wonder if the following slows it down?
We are currently editing over 1,317 articles...

The wiki is probably supposed to cache the "1,317", but maybe the page isn't
getting enough hits and the cache is usually empty, so the database has to
do a lookup? And there's some problem which makes the lookup slow?

How about experimenting by replacing the lookup with a fixed number. Try for
a few days. Similarly, maybe there are other elements that could be
simplified?? What about the RSS process?

Actually, I just noticed that the page currently says:
Failed to load RSS feed from
http://rss.gmane.org/messages/excerpts/gmane.comp.web.wiki.wikia.vim!
(four times - all feeds failed)

I guess that's why it was slow this time, but I think I've noticed
performance problems while the RSS worked...

John
