Hi Mike,
I'm only pretending to know what I'm doing<g>. However, here's my reasoning.
I want to get all the tips in a consistent state, with valid titles and
VimTip redirect pages, and working PreviousTip/NextTip navigation. So the
two tips you mention got my attention because the removed {{Tip}} template
made the tips inconsistent, and without navigation.
Yes - I would really like almost all comments deleted, or merged into the
tip body, or moved to a more relevant tip. However, I think we should keep
the "Comments" section on all tips, even if empty, for at least a couple
more months. Maybe keep them indefinitely if wanted ... that's something we
can discuss later.
I think Datagrok did a great job cleaning up the above tips, so it could be
argued that the Comments section is now redundant. However, I might notice a
comment in another tip, and think it's got a good point, but one that's more
relevant to the above tips. So I would just like to move the comment, and
worry about merging it in (or maybe deleting it) at a later time. So, I want
a blank Comments section for something anyone might want to add, even if
only a "todo".
I'm not going to become upset if someone starts discussing a tip in the talk
pages, but there is really a LOT to do before the tips are in a decent
state, and I still think that it would be better to keep the Comments in
plain view for now.
An argument against what I've just said is that I've noticed a couple of
recent additions to Comments of the "great tip" variety. That's
understandable because the Comments section does invite people to add
comments. I'm happy to live with that for now, but I'd become grumpy if a
tip had useful content (or queries) on the tip page AND on the talk page.
BTW I'm not happy with how the {{Tip}} template repeats the title just under
the page title. I'm planning to attack that RSN. However, I think it's
better to be consistent than to optimise the appearance of individual tips,
particularly at this stage. I've got the wikitext for all 1200 tips on my
local disk, and can confirm the obvious: A LOT of work remains.
John
