First, check out: http://phaseportrait.blogspot.com/2008/03/vim-latex-vim-70-and-filetype-plugin.html You'll need to add let g:tex_flavor='latex' to your .vimrc (as well as the other changes described by the VIM-LaTeX documentation). After that, you will only notice the Vim-LaTeX extensions firing up *AFTER* you edit TeX source (e.g., a file that ends in ".tex").
