I don't know if anyone plans to make a new release anytime soon, but the 2006 version should be sufficient for most users. Not too much has changed with respect to aspects of LaTeX that Vim-LaTeX helps you with. That is, Vim-LaTeX isn't really tied to a particular set of package versions.
