David -- This is a known problem. It's more a Vim--LaTeX issue than a vim-latex issue.
To start, see: http://phaseportrait.blogspot.com/2008/03/fixing-vim-latex-compiler-error.html Your sample (at least the first one) was fixed by wrapping pdflatex with vimlatex. It could also be fixed by one of the other workarounds mentioned at that link.
