I'm not sure exactly. I had an issue where .sty files were assigned filetype "tex", but I didn't get any syntax highlighting. I had the "filetype plugin on" instruction in a separate rc file, which was sourced in my vimrc, after an autocommand for the "tex" filetype. Putting that line before the autocommand fixed my issue.
